| Language Inc
is proud to be a distributor of the renowned Philips Language
Courses. Philips has over many years devised Language Learning
Systems (LLS), which are based on experience gained from the
Language-through-Pictures courses developed by Professor
I. A. Richards of Harvard University.
Language acquisition and second or third language
training is a very complex subject. However, through adopting
a natural approach – which we have all experienced in our
earliest childhood – the LLS is based on a multi-sensory
approach – Audio, Active and Comparative (AAC).
Since the AAC approach to language teaching is used, no
prior knowledge of a language is necessary and anyone older than
10 can attempt learning a new language. The courses cover a large
variety of languages which range in content between one to six
levels.
Level I
|
Basic conversational
vocabulary of some 500 words. |
Level II
|
Basic conversational vocabulary of
an additional 500 words. On completion of Levels I and II
the student has an active vocabulary of 1000 words and is
capable of understanding everyday conversations and of making
himself understood, using their tenses correctly. |
Level III
|
Enlarges the active
vocabulary by 1000 words and enables the student to relate
experiences and discuss a wide variety of topics, creating
practical day to day situations. |
Level IV
|
The student’s vocabulary is
extended by 900 words. This is achieved by use of sound tracks
from movies which cover a wide variety of subjects and topics
such as politics, science, business, crime, education, geography,
sport and psychology. |
Level V
|
About 600 new words and expressions
needed for conversations concerning business and technical
matters. |
| Level VI |
An additional 600 words and expressions
needed to extend the business and technical expertise of the
student. |
Topics covered in Levels V and VI include telecommunications,
data processing, application of computers, air pollution, physics,
diagnostic aids, surgery, sales planning, processing orders, handling
a complaint, discrepancies in an invoice, an urgent shipment and
Company organization etc.

Level 1 and 2 – Making a
start– 1 800 Words
These levels make a perfect introduction, and cover questions
and answers arising in everyday conversation. The student will
gain confidence and have the ability to speak in phrases together
with the use of tenses.
Level 3 – Building your skills–
800 Words
After completing level 3, the student will be able to hold discussions
on a wide range of topics, follow radio and television programmes
and understand newspaper articles.
This really depends on your commitment to your own regulated
learning. However, a guideline is that if you spend 30 minutes
a day, five days per week, each level will take you 4 –
6 weeks to complete.
The courses come in three (3) formats namely, Cassettes
and books; CD Audio and books; and CD-Rom and books.
